Created on January 15, 1973 in Lagos (Nigeria) on the occasion of the 2nd African Games, the African Handball Confederation (CAHB) is the institution that manages handball in Africa. The African Handball Confederation is a non-political, non-profit organization that currently includes 53 affiliated African federations.

The 6th Congress, held in Saly Portudal (Senegal) in 1986 as a prelude to the 40th Anniversary Congress of the International Handball Federation, resulted in a reorganization of the Executive Committee.

At the 10th Election Congress in February 1995 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, the delegates decided to separate the positions of Secretary General and Treasurer. Furthermore, in order to maintain cohesion within the African Handball community until the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, a position of Deputy President in charge of Administration and Finance was created, and Dr. Nabil SALEM retained the position of President from 1995 to 1996.
