Beach handball is a collective sport derived from indoor handball but practiced on sand (hence its name, beach meaning beach in English). Beach handball opposes two teams of four players (including a goalkeeper) who must throw a plastic ball for the purpose of their opponents. As in handball, the number of steps in hand is limited to three. The goals judged « spectacular » (360 °, Kung fu, goalkeeper shot, penalty) give two points.
The field is a rectangle of 27 by 12 meters, and the goal is the same size as handball (3 meters by 2 meters). The game is played in two sets of ten minutes each, with golden goal in case of a tie at the end of the regulation time.
If both teams have won a set, they are divided by a penalty shoot-out.
